Honoring the Struggle for Public University Education in Nigeria

The 2024 edition of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Heroes’ Day Celebration, held on November 12, was a profound reflection on the enduring struggle for the survival and revitalization of Nigeria’s public university system.
The day is set aside to honour members who have made significant contributions to the Union.
Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU’s National President, in his keynote address, highlighted the relentless challenges faced by the union. He lamented that despite several years of advocacy, negotiations, and sacrifices, the fight to safeguard Nigeria’s public universities from the influences of global financial institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) remains ongoing.
“Our struggle to rescue Nigeria’s public universities from the suffocating clutches of external financial forces determined to destroy and bury our educational system has not abated,” he declared.
Unfinished Agreements and Persistent Challenges
Professor Osodeke criticised the Federal Government for its failure to renegotiate the ASUU-FGN 2009 Agreement, which has dragged on for over a decade. He pointed out that despite numerous Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Memoranda of Action (MoAs), the agreement remains unfulfilled.
“It is lamentable that we are still struggling to complete the renegotiation of our 2009 Agreement twelve years after its review was due,” Osodeke stated. “The situation is further worsened by the imposition of IPPIS [Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System] on our universities, despite the Federal Executive Council’s directive to exclude tertiary education institutions.”
He also raised concerns about unpaid salaries, withheld promotions, and outstanding academic allowances, all of which continue to undermine the morale of university staff. Particularly concerning is the persecution of ASUU members in state universities such as Lagos State University, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, and Ebonyi State University, for standing in solidarity with the union’s cause.
Support and Recognition for Academic Excellence
A highlight of this year’s Heroes’ Day was the announcement of the Professional Development (PJD) Grants awarded to distinguished members across public universities. This initiative recognizes academic excellence and supports impactful research projects.
Each recipient was awarded ₦500,000 to support their research endeavors, signifying ASUU’s commitment to academic excellence despite ongoing challenges.
A Time to Reflect and Strategize
The celebration was marked by moments of reminiscence as members shared stories of past struggles and achievements. Friendly banter and reflections on ASUU’s scorecard provided an opportunity to reinforce solidarity among members.
In his concluding remarks, Professor Osodeke reaffirmed ASUU’s commitment to fighting for the soul of public university education in Nigeria. “We remain resolute in our mission to ensure that every Nigerian child has access to quality and affordable higher education,” he said.
This year’s Heroes’ Day Celebration was not only a testament to the resilience of ASUU but also a call to action for stakeholders to prioritize the future of Nigeria’s education system. It served as a reminder that the battle for the survival of public universities is a collective responsibility.
