#Abuja Infrastructure: Wike Reaffirms December Deadline for Major Road Projects

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to completing key ongoing road infrastructure projects in Abuja by December 2026.

Wike gave the assurance on Tuesday, August 18, during an inspection of the ongoing Inner Southern Expressway (ISEX 2) and Southern Parkway projects in the Federal Capital City.

The projects form part of major infrastructure developments aimed at improving road connectivity and easing movement within Abuja as the Nigerian capital continues to expand.

During the inspection, Wike commended CGC Nigeria Limited, the contractor handling the projects, for mobilising to site despite delays in the release of funds. He assured the company of timely funding to sustain construction work.

The Minister described the ISEX project as particularly important, noting that it was awarded in 2014 and has been under development for about 12 years.

“I really would want to thank Mr President for approving the complete release of the funds for the ISEX for the first phase, which will include two interchanges and take about 5 km of road,” Wike said.

He also praised the contractor for continuing with construction despite not having received significant mobilisation, describing the progress as evidence of the company’s commitment to the project.

According to the Minister, the first phase of the ISEX project will include two interchanges and approximately five kilometres of road.

Wike expressed confidence that the ongoing works would be completed before the end of 2026, reiterating the administration’s determination to deliver major infrastructure projects within the set timelines.

He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting infrastructure development in the FCT and approving funds for the completion of projects inherited from previous administrations.

The inspection of the ISEX 2 and Southern Parkway projects highlights the FCT Administration’s broader effort to accelerate the delivery of critical road infrastructure in Abuja, where population growth and urban expansion continue to increase demand for efficient transportation networks.

If completed as projected, the projects are expected to strengthen connectivity across the capital and contribute to the development of Abuja’s expanding urban network.
