In the bustling streets of Kwara, Nigeria, a thriving food business tells a story of resilience, innovation, and economic empowerment.
At the helm of Abu Toyyibah Foods is Jamiu Ibrahim, a determined entrepreneur who has transformed a humble beginning into a profitable venture.
Jamiu ventured into the business world four years ago, starting with less than a hundred thousand naira. Today, he operates a flourishing enterprise dealing in Point-of-Sale (POS) services, frozen foods, and street snacks. His journey is a testament to his mantra: “If you’re smart, you’ll make it.”
What sets Jamiu apart is his innovative approach to street snack production. While many rely on charcoal, he uses gas to fry puff-puff and other snacks, ensuring efficiency and environmental friendliness. His workers, a team of young men, fry and serve with enthusiasm, drawing customers from far and wide.
When asked why he chooses to employ only men, Jamiu explains, “The work is stressful, and I’ve found that young men can handle the physical demands better.” Over the years, he has trained and employed countless individuals, passing on his business acumen to the next generation.
One such individual is Mahmoud Jibril, a National Certificate in Education (NCE) holder from Ilorin. Mahmoud spent less than a year learning the ropes under Jamiu’s tutelage. Driven by a desire to support his parents and build a future, Mahmoud embraced the business with zeal. “The business is profitable,” he says with a smile, expertly flipping puff-puff in the sizzling oil. His pride in his work is palpable as he shares stories of satisfied customers and his plans for the future.
For Jamiu and Mahmoud, this business is more than just a livelihood—it’s a beacon of hope. It demonstrates that with creativity, hard work, and determination, success is achievable, even in challenging environments.
Their story is a reminder of the entrepreneurial spirit that drives many young Africans to overcome obstacles and create opportunities, not just for themselves, but for others. As Jamiu aptly puts it, “In this business, if you’re smart, you’ll make it.”
Indeed, the streets of Kwara hum with the energy of people like Jamiu and Mahmoud—innovators and dreamers whose journeys inspire others to strive for greatness.
