Kuli Kuli is a delicious, crunchy snack made from groundnuts (peanuts) and spices. It’s a popular treat in many parts of West Africa, and making it at home is surprisingly easy. Follow these simple steps to create your own flavorful Kuli Kuli.
Ingredients:
Groundnuts (peanuts)
Spices of your choice (pepper, onions, ginger)
Warm water
Oil for frying
Step 1: Roast the Groundnuts
Begin by lightly roasting the groundnuts. You want to heat them until they’re slightly warm, but be careful not to brown them. The roasting helps enhance the nutty flavor without making them bitter.
Step 2: Peel the Groundnuts
Once the groundnuts are roasted, allow them to cool slightly before peeling off their skins. You can rub them between your hands to help remove the skin easily.
Step 3: Add Your Desired Spices
Next, add the spices that will flavor your Kuli Kuli. Common additions include pepper, onions, and ginger, but feel free to experiment with your favorites. The combination of spices will give the Kuli Kuli its signature taste.
Step 4: Grind the Mixture
Once the spices are added, grind the roasted groundnuts and spices together in a food processor or using a mortar and pestle. The mixture should be slightly chunky, not a fine paste.
Step 5: Knead the Dough
Transfer the groundnut-spice mixture to a flat surface and begin kneading. Gradually add warm water to help the mixture come together. Continue kneading until the oil starts to separate from the dough, and it becomes a smooth, elastic consistency.
Step 6: Preheat the Oil
While kneading, begin heating the oil in a pan or deep fryer. It should be hot enough for frying but not smoking. This ensures a crispy texture when the Kuli Kuli is fried.
Step 7: Shape and Fry
Once the dough is ready, divide it into small portions and shape it into your desired form. You can roll it into balls, flatten it into discs, or form small logs – whatever shape you prefer. Carefully drop the shaped Kuli Kuli into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy.
Step 8: Drain and Serve
Once fried, remove the Kuli Kuli from the oil and place it on a paper towel to drain any excess oil. Allow it to cool slightly before serving.
Enjoy your homemade Kuli Kuli as a snack on its own or paired with garri ,pap or any cereal.
Making Kuli Kuli at home is a fun and rewarding process that yields a tasty snack you can share with family and friends.
