The U.S. Department of State has announced that nearly 20,000 American citizens have safely returned to the United States from the Middle East since February 28, as part of an ongoing effort to support Americans seeking to leave the region.
In a statement released Thursday, Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson said the evacuation and assistance operations are continuing, with additional flights and ground transport arrangements being expanded.
According to the Department, the figure represents Americans who have already arrived safely in the United States. It does not include those who have relocated to other countries in the region or individuals who have departed the Middle East but are still in transit back home.
