Outdoor enthusiasts in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, are advised to inform the police before embarking on excursions and hikes.

In response to rising security concerns in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of  Nigeria,The Police Command has issued a directive urging individuals and groups to inform law enforcement agencies  before embarking on hiking or camping trips.

Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ajao S. Adewale, emphasised  the need for collaboration between outdoor enthusiasts and security agencies to mitigate potential threats in remote areas. He warned that unauthorised excursions to isolated locations could expose participants to criminal activities.

A statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, highlighted the importance of safety planning, advising the public—especially youth groups and organizations—to liaise with the police before venturing into outdoor activities.

“The FCT Police Command encourages members of the public to seek guidance on safe routes and security arrangements before embarking on any camping or hiking trip,” the statement read.

The police further advised that organisers of such activities should take proactive measures, including keeping accurate records of participants to prevent cases of missing persons. Effective communication with law enforcement before and during these events, the statement noted, would enhance safety and facilitate quick response in emergencies.

To request security support or report suspicious activities, the public has been encouraged to reach out to the FCT Police Command through its emergency contact lines
