At least five humanitarian workers were among those injured following recent attacks, with significant damage reported to port infrastructure. Environmentalists have also raised alarms over the potential for oil leaks into the Red Sea, posing serious environmental threats.
In a statement released on Saturday by his spokesperson, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the urgent need for adherence to international law, including international humanitarian law. He called on all parties involved to respect and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure at all times.
The Secretary-General expressed deep concern over the ongoing missile and drone attacks by Houthi forces targeting Israel and vessels navigating the Red Sea. He urged the group to immediately cease such attacks.
Guterres also highlighted the importance of upholding Security Council Resolution 2768 (2025), which addresses Houthi attacks against merchant and commercial vessels, stressing that the resolution must be fully respected.
Warning of a growing risk of broader regional escalation, Guterres urged all parties to exercise the “utmost restraint” to prevent further deterioration of the situation. He also reiterated his call for the “immediate and unconditional” release of all UN and other personnel arbitrarily detained by Houthi forces.
