FG to Support Victims of Borgu Boat Mishap, Orders Nationwide Waterways Safety Campaign

The Federal Government has announced plans to support survivors and families of victims affected by Tuesday’s tragic boat mishap in Borgu, Niger State, which claimed 32 lives.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, said the government has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately collaborate with the Niger State Government in providing relief materials and necessary assistance.

Beyond emergency response, the Minister disclosed that the Federal Government has also mandated the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to embark on a nationwide sensitisation campaign on waterway safety. The campaign will emphasise the compulsory use of protective jackets and adherence to safety guidelines before embarking on boat trips.

“This tragedy once again underscores the need for strict compliance with safety measures on our inland waterways. A simple precaution, like wearing a life jacket, could be the difference between life and death,” Idris cautioned.

He also commended the Niger State Government and its emergency agency for the prompt rescue operation, which ensured all passengers were accounted for, with about 50 people rescued.

The Minister added that while government support is crucial, citizens must take personal responsibility by prioritising safety whenever they travel on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
