The Controller of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service, Engr. Adebayo Amiola Zacchaeus, has called for urgent attention to the development of more fire stations across key districts of Abuja, including Wuse, Guzape, Mpape, Jikwoyi, Orozo, Karshi, Karsana, Idu, Karimo, and Lugbe, to strengthen emergency response and public safety.
Engr. Zacchaeus made the appeal during a press conference marking the 23rd anniversary of the FCT Fire Service. He emphasised that the Service, like its counterparts across the world, comprises men and women from diverse professional backgrounds and plays a vital role beyond fire suppression.
According to him, the modern fire service has evolved into a hub of technical, administrative, and strategic expertise that requires continuous support and modernization to function effectively.
“As we celebrate our anniversary, we must also be mindful that the dry season is upon us — a period typically marked by high temperatures, low humidity, dry vegetation, dusty winds, and increased human activities such as bush burning and careless waste disposal. These conditions make fire outbreaks more frequent and more severe,” Zacchaeus said.
He identified the overuse and aging of firefighting trucks as a major challenge confronting the Service, noting that many of the trucks have exceeded their optimal lifespan.
“The cost of keeping them functional through constant maintenance continues to rise, and this is no longer economical,” he lamented.
The Fire Controller also raised concerns over manpower shortages, stressing that while the Federal Capital Territory has expanded rapidly with new districts emerging, the Service’s personnel and resources have not grown in proportion to this expansion.
“Every district should ideally have a functional fire station for quick response to emergencies. Unfortunately, several areas still lack such a presence,” he said.
Engr. Zacchaeus commended both serving and retired officers of the FCT Fire Service for their dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice, while honoring the memory of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
He also expressed appreciation to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), private sector partners, community leaders, and residents for their continued collaboration and support.
“We have come this far, stronger and more determined to serve our country faithfully. Your support remains the lifeblood of our collective progress,” he added.
