The Chinese government has called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty, following reports of a U.S. threat of possible military action against the West African nation.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday in Beijing, Mao Ning, Spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed China’s strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, praising Nigeria’s commitment to pursuing a development model aligned with its national realities.
“As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as a pretext to meddle in another country’s internal affairs or impose sanctions and military threats,” Mao stated.
The remarks came after reports that U.S. President Donald Trump threatened potential military intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians—a claim that has drawn criticism from several quarters.
China’s statement underscores its long-standing diplomatic stance favoring non-interference and mutual respect for sovereignty, principles that have shaped its relations with African nations for decades.
Beijing and Abuja have maintained a strategic partnership anchored on economic cooperation, infrastructure development, and shared multilateral goals. China’s latest position signals continued political and diplomatic alignment with Nigeria amid rising global geopolitical tensions.
