In a significant move towards fostering peace in South Sudan, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Youssouf Ali, has reaffirmed the AU’s unwavering commitment to dialogue and reconciliation in the country. Following direct talks with President Salva Kiir, the Chairperson addressed the evolving political situation and the recent violence in Nasir, expressing solidarity with the Government and people of South Sudan.
To strengthen mediation efforts and support the full implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), the Chairperson has announced the dispatch of a high-level delegation from the AU Panel of the Wise to Juba. This delegation will engage all stakeholders to de-escalate tensions and promote constructive dialogue.
The AU has urged all parties in South Sudan to uphold the provisions of the R-ARCSS and ensure its full implementation, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the commitments made in the peace agreement.
Furthermore, the AU remains actively engaged with regional and international partners, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the East African Community (EAC), and the United Nations, to support South Sudan’s transition towards lasting peace and democracy.
