AU and IGAD Welcome Quad’s Commitment to Sudan Peace Process

Addis Ababa & Djibouti, September 14, 2025 — The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have expressed strong support for the Joint Statement issued by the Quad — comprising the Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States — regarding the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The two African organizations described the Quad’s position as fully aligned with their Roadmaps for peace in Sudan, particularly its emphasis on humanitarian access, political transition, and rejection of external interference.

In their joint response, the AUC and IGAD welcomed:

The call for rapid humanitarian access and protection of civilians, alongside a three-month humanitarian truce under the Jeddah process, as an initial step toward a permanent cessation of hostilities.

The launch of a civilian-led transition process within nine months, ensuring inclusivity, legitimacy, and accountability.

A firm stance against external military support and extremist influence.

Continued support for the Jeddah process in coordination with regional and international partners.

Reaffirming their readiness to work in partnership with the Quad and Sudanese stakeholders, the AU and IGAD pledged to help end the war, safeguard Sudan’s sovereignty and unity, and advance an inclusive, civilian-led political transition.

Looking ahead, the African Union and IGAD, in collaboration with the League of Arab States, the United Nations, and the European Union, announced plans to convene a new round of consultations with Sudanese civilian groups this October. The consultations aim to foster unity among Sudanese stakeholders and lay the foundation for an inclusive national dialogue and transition to a civilian-led constitutional order.

The AU and IGAD emphasized their shared view with the Quad that “there can be no military solution to the Sudanese crisis.” Both organizations affirmed their commitment to continue working closely with international partners to return Sudan to stability and democratic governance.
